Lagos Commissioner for Tourism Denies Assault Allegations Amid Investigation
The Lagos State government has launched an investigation into allegations that the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, assaulted a public officer. This follows the emergence of a viral video showing her engaged in a heated argument with Qudus Onikeku, the owner of the firm managing the J.K. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History.
In a press statement, the Ministry clarified the circumstances surrounding the incident, stating that Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka was conducting an inspection visit when she discovered that Onikeku was operating a canteen on the premises without the Ministry's approval. This led her to question the legality of the establishment, which prompted resistance from the Centre Director and his team.
The statement emphasized that the Commissioner was fulfilling her statutory responsibilities and that the confrontation arose from the illegal operation of the canteen.
