Lagos CJ Orders Release of 18 Inmates, Deportation of Two Chadians to Decongest Prisons
Kazeem Alogba, chief judge of Lagos, has ordered the release of 18 inmates from custodial centres across the state and the deportation of two Chadian nationals as part of efforts to reduce overcrowding in correctional facilities.
Alogba gave the directive during a special session held at the Ogba Magistrates’ Court, organised under the 2026 prison decongestion exercise. The chief judge said the move was aimed at promoting justice, easing congestion in correctional centres, and ensuring that inmates who no longer needed to remain in custody were appropriately discharged, while foreign nationals without legal standing were returned to their home country, Chad
