When a man ejaculates during sexual intercourse, semen (which contains millions of sperm) is released into the woman's vagina. From there, the sperm begin their journey through the cervix and into the uterus, aiming to reach the fallopian tubes where fertilization may occur if an egg is present.

Not all sperm survive this journey many die along the way due to the acidic environment of the vagina or because they don’t make it through the cervix.

 However, the strongest sperm can live inside the female reproductive system for up to 5 days, increasing the chances of pregnancy if ovulation occurs during this period.
