Former Peruvian President Humala Sentenced to 15 Years in Major Corruption Case

Former President of Peru, Olanta Humala, has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars for his involvement in a major corruption and money laundering scandal tied to the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht. His wife, Nadine Heredia, received an identical sentence.

A Peruvian court found the couple guilty of illegally receiving $3 million in campaign funds from Odebrecht and an additional $200,000 from late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chávez.

The illegal contributions reportedly supported Humala's 2006 and 2011 presidential bids.
