68-YEAR-OLD BRITISH WOMAN SAYS 31-YEAR-OLD NIGERIAN HUSBAND “DID A RUNNER” AFTER MOVING TO UK

A 68-year-old British woman, Dawn Otewell, has spoken out after alleging that her 31-year-old Nigerian husband disappeared after moving to the UK on a spouse visa.

Dawn said she met Bright Emokpae, from Edo State, online in 2021. According to her account, he initially introduced himself using a different name and gave her misleading information about his age and profession before revealing more about his background.

The pair eventually married in Cyprus in March 2022, after which Bright returned to Nigeria to apply for a UK spouse visa.

Dawn claims that when he eventually arrived in the UK, their relationship deteriorated. She alleged that he became distant, frequently asked her for money, contributed little toward household expenses and regularly sent money to Nigeria.

The couple separated in 2023 but later reconciled. Dawn said Bright eventually left again shortly before Christmas 2024 and has not returned.

She now fears he may be living elsewhere in the UK and believes he is avoiding her while she tries to finalise their divorce.

“He’s done a runner and is refusing to sign the divorce papers because I believe he wants to cling on to his spouse visa,” Dawn said.

Dawn, who says she has not been able to contact him for months, also expressed concern about what could happen to her possessions and inheritance if she dies before the marriage is legally dissolved.

She is reportedly receiving assistance from Citizens Advice in trying to locate him and serve the divorce papers.

The allegations are Dawn’s account and have not been independently established.
