Zambian Police Officer Arrested for Releasing Prisoners on New Year's Eve
A police officer in Zambia has been arrested for allegedly releasing over a dozen prisoners to allow them to celebrate New Year's Eve while under the influence of alcohol.
Detective Inspector Titus Phiri reportedly "forcibly seized cell keys" on January 1 while intoxicated and unlocked both male and female cells at a detention center near Kanyama. He instructed the 13 detainees, who faced charges including assault, affray, and theft, to leave, telling them they were free to "cross over into the New Year."
As a result of this incident, a manhunt has been launched for the 13 detainees who remain at large.
