UK to Ban SIM Farms
The UK is set to become the first European country to ban the possession and supply of "SIM farms," multi-SIM devices used by fraudsters to send scam messages and create fake accounts on a large scale.
Under new provisions in the Crime and Policing Bill, individuals found guilty will face unlimited fines in England and Wales, while offenders in Scotland and Northern Ireland may face fines up to £5,000.
The Home Office estimates the annual social cost of fraud at £6.8 billion, making the new law a key measure to protect both household finances and national confidence.
Vodafone and other mobile carriers, who have already blocked over one billion fraudulent messages since 2023, have supported the new law.
