Timaya Reflects on Industry Journey
Nigerian dancehall icon Timaya has opened up in a candid interview with Afrobeats Intelligence, recounting his journey from the gritty streets of Port Harcourt to becoming a household name in the music industry.
The 44-year-old “Dem Mama” hitmaker also took a swipe at the current state of Nigerian music, expressing deep concern about its direction.
According to Timaya, the music of today lacks the emotional depth and authenticity that once defined the industry. "Most artistes these days no even mean wetin dem dey sing. The music no dey connect," he lamented. He attributed the disconnect to the growing reliance on songwriters, noting that many artists are now more focused on producing what's trendy rather than what’s true to them.
