The military Ensures Safety of Former President Jonathan Following Guinea-Bissau Coup
Military officers in the West African nation declared “total control”, suspended the electoral process, and closed all borders following the recent presidential election, where both the incumbent and the main opposition candidate claimed victory before official results were announced.
Jonathan had been in Guinea-Bissau as part of a 36 member joint mission of the African Union (AU), ECOWAS, and the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) tasked with monitoring the election. He led the WAEF observer group.
Authorities have confirmed that former President Jonathan has returned safely to Nigeria, with no harm coming to him amid the political unrest in Guinea Bissau
