Ryan Coogler Really Gave Us a Filmmaking Lesson With Sinners ????????

To bring Michael B. Jordan’s twins, Smoke and Stack, to life in Sinners, Ryan Coogler and his team didn’t simply duplicate Jordan on screen.

Jordan actually performed as one twin opposite a body double, carefully matching the timing, movements and reactions needed for the scene. He would then change into the other character and perform the same sequence again.

For scenes where both twins appear together, the production team used motion-control technology to recreate the exact camera movements before combining the two performances through visual effects.

Even something as simple as Smoke and Stack passing a cigarette to each other required Jordan to precisely repeat the interaction multiple times so the performances could be seamlessly merged.

More complex scenes involved additional equipment, including a Halo rig, alongside extensive VFX work.

Coogler and Jordan have also taken fans behind the scenes, showing just how much performance, costume, makeup, cinematography and visual effects went into making the twins feel like two completely different people.

And honestly, that’s the biggest compliment to the entire team:

While watching Sinners, you can genuinely forget that Smoke and Stack are played by the same actor. ????????

Michael B. Jordan + Ryan Coogler = cinema.
