Questions are mounting in Russia after the unexplained death of a young woman who worked at a Siberian laboratory specializing in plague research.
The woman was a laboratory technician at the Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute in southeastern Russia. While authorities have sought to reassure the public and reject suggestions that she died from plague, officials have reportedly moved quickly to isolate people who had contact with her.
The response has fueled speculation, particularly after local hospitals introduced additional disease-control measures.
CNN reports that a maternity hospital in the region has begun conducting comprehensive health screenings and asking patients to complete questionnaires about symptoms associated with plague and other infectious diseases.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed what illness caused the woman’s death, leaving unanswered questions about why such extensive precautions are being taken. The situation remains under investigation
