Newlywed Couple Among 18 Injured in Ghastly Accident on Third Mainland Bridge
A tragic accident on December 7 involved a newlywed couple returning from the Ikoyi Marriage Registry, as well as 16 other individuals, on the Third Mainland Bridge near Ilaje, heading towards Iyana Oworonsoki.
The collision occurred between a mini truck (AGL 22 YE) and a commercial LT bus (BFG 204 XF), reportedly due to brake failure on the LT bus, which was traveling at excessive speed. The bus struck the mini truck, which was moving slowly because of mechanical issues.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, spokesperson for the Lagos Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), 16 passengers seated in the rear of the LT bus—comprising 11 women and 5 men—sustained significant injuries. They were promptly transported to the Lagos State Trauma and Emergency Centre near the Toll Gate on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for urgent medical attention.
Two additional passengers seated at the front of the LT bus were trapped in the wreckage, suffering severe fractures. They were extricated through the combined efforts of LASTMA personnel, emergency responders, and bystanders, and were later rushed to Gbagada General Hospital for specialized treatment.
Adebayo noted that the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASABUS) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit (LRU) played crucial roles in the swift evacuation of all casualties. Law enforcement officers from Alonge Police Station and operatives of the Lagos State Task Force provided vital security support at the scene, ensuring order during the rescue operation.
