NBA Affirms Only NBC Has Authority to Regulate Broadcast Content, Responds to Kano State’s New Media Rules
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has clarified that state governments in Nigeria do not have the legal power to regulate radio and television broadcast content, emphasizing that this jurisdiction belongs exclusively to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
This statement was issued following recent regulatory measures introduced by the Kano State Government aimed at protecting the state’s cultural and religious values. The new rules include a ban on live political programs and require media guests to sign undertakings against making abusive or defamatory comments. Additionally, presenters are barred from asking provocative questions or using gestures that could harm Kano State’s reputation.
The NBA’s position challenges the Kano government’s directives, reinforcing the NBC’s sole responsibility over broadcast regulation nationwide.
