NAFDAC Shuts Down Over 11,000 Stores, Arrests 40 in Nationwide Crackdown on Fake Drugs
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified its fight against counterfeit and substandard medications, shutting down over 11,000 stores and arresting 40 individuals across the country.
Speaking to reporters in Lagos, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, revealed that the ongoing enforcement operation had been meticulously planned for over a year, involving covert surveillance.
Since February 10, NAFDAC has been targeting major drug markets, including Idumota in Lagos, Ariaria in Aba, and the Bridge market in Onitsha three hubs responsible for over 80% of medication distribution in Nigeria.
The crackdown has led to the confiscation of a massive haul of illicit drugs, including:
Over 20 trucks of substandard medications removed from Aba.
No fewer than 30 trucks of seized drugs confiscated in Onitsha.
27 trucks of counterfeit drugs cleared from Idumota market in Lagos.
