Minister of Works Orders Immediate Reopening of Independence Bridge in Lagos

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has directed the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos to vehicular traffic.

This directive was issued on Wednesday in response to the massive traffic gridlock that stretched from Lekki, through Victoria Island, to Falomo Bridge and beyond, which was caused by the earlier closure of the bridge for planned maintenance and rehabilitation works.

The Federal Government had initially closed the bridge to begin repairs, but the commencement of the rehabilitation project on Tuesday led to significant traffic disruptions, with Lagos residents spending hours on the road.

In a statement on Wednesday night, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, confirmed the reopening and expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to motorists. She also appealed for understanding and cooperation from the public
