Meta Threatens to Exit Nigeria
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has issued a stern warning that it may shut down access to its platforms in Nigeria if ongoing regulatory pressures and fines totaling over $290 million are not resolved.
The tech giant's warning follows a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that upheld penalties imposed by three Nigerian agencies in 2023.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) fined Meta $220 million over alleged anti-competitive behavior. The Advertising Regulatory Council demanded $37.5 million for unauthorized advertisements, while the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) imposed a $32.8 million penalty for alleged privacy breaches.
