Man Sentenced to 13 Years in Prison, 20 Strokes for Raping Neighbour’s 10-Year-Old Daughter in Minna

A man identified as Aliyu Bala has been sentenced to 13 years in prison and 20 strokes of the cane after being convicted of raping his neighbour’s 10-year-old daughter in Minna, Niger State.

The court also ordered Bala to pay ₦250,000 in compensation to the victim.

Following the judgment, authorities reportedly took the convict to the Hakimi Palace in Bosso, where the 20-stroke punishment was publicly carried out in the presence of community members.

The Director-General of the Niger State Child Rights Agency, Barrister Ummul-kalthume Muhammad, described the development as a significant step in demonstrating the government’s firm stance against sexual abuse of children.

She said the public enforcement was intended to send a strong message that anyone who abuses a child will face consequences, while urging communities not to shield perpetrators.

A representative of the Niger State Ministry of Justice, Shafa, also described the ruling as an important development that could influence how similar cases are handled in the future.

She urged members of the public to report suspected cases of child abuse rather than allowing offenders to evade justice.

According to her, the victim’s mother had initially considered withdrawing the case but later chose to continue with the legal process after understanding the importance of seeking justice for her daughter and holding the accused accountable
