Man injured after being shot by ICE officer in Austin, Texas

A man was injured in a shooting involving a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in North Austin shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday.

The incident reportedly occurred near the intersection of Anderson Square and Research Boulevard. Two witnesses working at a nearby business told KUT News they heard two gunshots before going outside to see what had happened.

One witness said they encountered an ICE agent and a man who had been shot in the back while inside a vehicle. The witness reportedly asked whether an ambulance had been called, and the agent responded that it had.

Emergency medical crews arrived shortly afterward and transported the man to Dell Seton Medical Center. City officials said he was in stable condition.

At a City Hall news conference, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson stressed that the Austin Police Department was not involved in the shooting. He said he was “angry” about what happened and called for APD to participate in the investigation to provide an independent review.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the city deserved answers and pledged that the investigation would be as transparent as possible.

ICE had not responded to requests for information at the time of the report.

The incident comes amid other reports of federal immigration agents shooting people in cities including Houston, Minneapolis and Biddeford, Maine. U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, who represents parts of Austin, described the incidents as “a disturbing pattern.”
