Real Madrid and France superstar Kylian Mbappé is facing growing criticism in China after his reaction to an internet meme featuring former Chinese leader Mao Zedong sparked controversy.

The controversy began after a clip from a French podcast circulated online, showing Mbappé reacting to a meme that superimposed his face onto an image of Mao. His remarks describing the figure as a Chinese dictator were widely criticised by Chinese audiences.

The fallout has reportedly been significant, with Chinese companies Dongpeng Beverage, Mengniu Dairy, and Shanghai Milkground ending their partnerships with the football star. Chinese state television has also reportedly suspended broadcasts of Spanish La Liga matches and content featuring Mbappé.

In response, Mbappé issued an apology on October 27, saying his comment was ill-judged and acknowledging that it had hurt people in China and Chinese communities around the world. He also expressed respect for the Chinese people and their history.

Despite the apology, criticism has continued on Chinese social media, raising questions about the impact of cultural sensitivity on international stars and their commercial partnerships.

What’s your take on this controversy? Was Mbappé’s apology enough, or should celebrities be more careful about the jokes they make
