KYLIAN MBAPPÉ APOLOGISES AFTER CONTROVERSIAL MAO ZEDONG MEME REMARKS
Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappé has apologised after comments he made about a meme depicting the late Chinese leader Mao Zedong sparked controversy and reportedly led several Chinese brands to drop him.
“I apologise to everyone my words have upset,” Mbappé said, expressing regret over what he described as “ill-judged” remarks.
The controversy followed an appearance on the French talk show The Bridge, where Mbappé discussed a meme that made him laugh. While describing it, he referred to the figure shown as a Chinese dictator before the clip cut to an image superimposing his face onto a picture resembling Mao.
The meme forms part of an ongoing online joke portraying the French forward as a “dictator” because of his enormous influence in football.
However, his comments have attracted criticism, with the situation reportedly affecting his relationships with several Chinese brands.
