IGP Egbetokun Vows Strong Response to Assaults on Police Officers

On January 3, 2025, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun declared a zero-tolerance policy towards assaults on police officers during an official visit to the Enugu police headquarters. 

Egbetokun emphasized that any form of assault or killing of police personnel would be met with a calculated and well-deserved response. “We’ll not tolerate any assault on our police officers, not to talk of killing. Any assault on policemen is criminal. It is an assault on the police IGP,” he stated firmly.

He pledged that 2025 would mark a decisive shift in the approach to policing, saying, “This year, we are going to say no to assault on our police. We are going to say capital no to killing of our men.” Egbetokun expressed determination to stamp out criminal activities and ensure that those who have been driven out do not return.

The IGP assured the Enugu State Police Command of his commitment to providing necessary resources and modern security gadgets to enhance their capabilities. “I am going to support the Command with everything and resources at our disposal so that the achievements you have recorded will not be tampered with and you record more achievements,” he said.

Egbetokun also highlighted the importance of professionalism and ethical conduct within the police force, promising to prioritize training and retraining for officers. He stressed the significance of equipping the police with modern tools to effectively carry out their duties.

Furthermore, he addressed the welfare of police officers, stating, “No IGP will neglect the welfare of the officers,” underscoring the need for a supportive environment for those serving in the force.
