 GAVIN NEWSOM SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER TO ADVANCE AI OVERSIGHT AND ‘KILL SWITCH’

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order aimed at accelerating independent oversight and safety measures for advanced artificial intelligence systems.

The order directs experts to develop recommendations that could include independent audits of AI companies, third-party verification of safety measures, and the creation of an emergency “kill switch” capable of shutting down advanced AI models in certain situations.

Newsom also criticized President Donald Trump and Congress, arguing that the federal government has not done enough on AI oversight. That criticism is Newsom’s stated political position; the executive order itself focuses on California’s AI safety framework.

The expert group is expected to provide its recommendations within two months, while California moves to accelerate the implementation of recently passed AI oversight laws.
