Femi Falana Assembles Legal Team to Challenge "Malicious" Detention Under IBB's Regime
Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has announced plans to challenge his detention during General Ibrahim Babangida's military rule, calling it "malicious and unjust."
Falana revealed that he, along with the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, and three others, was persecuted for opposing the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, which was won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.
Reflecting on the events, Falana lamented that 32 years later, Babangida now expresses regret over the annulment, despite having deliberately nullified the election results and detained activists who resisted it. He accused the former military ruler of arresting, prosecuting, and parading them as criminals for simply defending democracy.
The senior lawyer insists that Babangida’s actions had long-term consequences for Nigeria’s democratic development. With his legal challenge, Falana aims to seek justice for the wrongful prosecution and further cement the historical significance of the June 12 struggle
