Benin Republic has placed Candide Azannai, a former defence minister and prominent opposition figure, in pre-trial detention over his alleged involvement in a recent coup attempt.
Azannai was arrested last week at his party’s headquarters in Cotonou.
Authorities accuse him of plotting against the state and inciting rebellion. He was reportedly taken into custody at dawn after several hours of questioning at the country’s anti-terrorism court.
