Taliban Issues New Decree to Restrict Visibility of Women in Homes

In a controversial move, Afghanistan's Taliban supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, has mandated that new residential buildings be constructed without windows overlooking areas typically used by women.

 This directive aims to prevent women from being seen in their homes, with officials stating that visibility may lead to "obscene acts."

According to a statement from Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, the decree specifies that windows should not allow views into courtyards, kitchens, or even neighbors' wells—spaces where women often perform daily tasks. The Taliban's rationale is rooted in their interpretation of modesty and public morality.

Municipal authorities have been tasked with monitoring construction to ensure compliance. Existing windows that violate this decree are to be blocked or concealed to eliminate any potential "nuisances" to neighbors.

Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in August 2021, women have faced increasing restrictions in public life, further limiting their visibility and participation in society.
