Afghan cyclist Fariba Hashimi has won a silver medal at the Asian Games, turning a remarkable journey of determination and resilience into a moment of triumph.

Before fleeing Afghanistan after the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Hashimi said she had trained while disguised as a man because she feared being attacked for pursuing a career in cycling.

Now an Asian Games medallist, Hashimi described the achievement as “something special” and hopes her success will inspire other Afghan women to pursue their dreams despite the restrictions they face.

“I hope that the next generation will come here and represent their country without any fear.”
