 ANAK KRAKATAU ERUPTS, THOUSANDS OF FLIGHTS DISRUPTED IN INDONESIA

Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano has entered an intense eruptive phase, sending volcanic ash plumes soaring to around 15,000 metres (50,000 feet) and causing major disruptions to air travel.

The eruption forced several airports to suspend operations, disrupting thousands of flights and affecting hundreds of thousands of passengers across Indonesia. Volcanic ash poses a serious risk to aircraft engines, prompting airlines to cancel, delay and reroute flights. 

Authorities have maintained the volcano at Alert Level III, while people have been warned to stay at least 3 kilometres away from the crater. Although some airports have since reopened as ash conditions improved, officials continue to monitor the volcano amid the possibility of further eruptions.

Anak Krakatau is the volcano that emerged from the caldera of the historic 1883 Krakatoa eruption and remains one of Indonesia’s closely monitored active volcanoes.
