Amid rising tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the chairman of the party’s National Reconciliation Committee, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, announced that the committee has successfully reconciled conflicting members of the National Working Committee (NWC). This declaration followed a meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday with NWC members.
Oyinlola expressed gratitude for the resolution of internal disputes, stating, “The outcome of today’s meeting is that, to the glory of God, we have been able to resolve the differences that have been causing our party some headache within the National Working Committee.” He emphasized the need for unity within the party, crucial for its progress, but refrained from detailing the specific issues that were resolved.
When asked about the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, Oyinlola noted that such discussions were not part of their agenda and he was not in a position to comment on it, affirming that his role in reconciling the NWC was complete.
Attendees of the meeting included Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, National Secretary Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, and other key party officials. The meeting follows a tumultuous period marked by suspensions and counter-suspensions among party leaders, including the suspension of National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade, which led to a stalemate resolved by the PDP Governors Forum.
Governor Bala Mohammed, chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, previously called for a cease-fire and a return to the status quo. However, uncertainty lingers as reports suggest certain members, allegedly acting on Mohammed's behalf, have filed a lawsuit aimed at ensuring the NEC meeting proceeds as scheduled on October 24. The five-count suit, filed in Zamfara Federal High Court, seeks to restrain the Damagum-led NWC from postponing the meeting, adding a layer of complexity to the already fraught party dynamics.
