Chief James Onwordi Asika, the Onishe of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom, has called on former President Olusegun Obasanjo to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform under which he governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2007.
During his appeal, Chief Onwordi highlighted the necessity of Obasanjo's extensive experience in reshaping and rebranding the PDP to reclaim power from the All Progressives Congress (APC). He emphasized that Obasanjo's influence is vital in addressing the increasing hardships faced by Nigerians since the APC assumed leadership.
The Onishe remarked that Obasanjo's transition to a statesman does not have to be permanent, suggesting that his return could significantly contribute to national development. “Obasanjo is a key figure in helping the party regain power,” he stated, pointing out that as the PDP's first elected president, he played a crucial role in shaping Nigeria's democracy.
With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, Chief Onwordi expressed optimism that Obasanjo's involvement could lead to the emergence of a strong candidate capable of challenging APC’s Bola Tinubu. He underscored the PDP's commitment to serving the interests of Nigerians, asserting, “The PDP is still the only party with the interest of Nigerians at heart.”
Looking ahead, Chief Onwordi voiced a desire to see a presidential candidate from Igbo land representing the PDP in the 2027 elections, declaring, "It's time for the Igbos to produce a president."
