Nigerian Lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh Arraigned for Assaulting Bolt Driver


The Nigerian Police Force has arraigned Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, after he was filmed assaulting a Bolt driver at his residence in Abuja.

Ikwechegh, who represents the Aba North and South federal constituency of Abia State, appeared before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court in Kuje on October 30. He was prosecuted by the Special Investigation Unit of the Inspector General of Police.

During the court proceedings, Ikwechegh pleaded not guilty to charges of abuse of office, assault, and threat to life. The presiding judge, Abubakar Umar Sai’id, granted him bail set at N500,000. The case has been adjourned to November 8.

Police Force PRO Olumuyiwa Adejobi shared the news on X, stating: "RULE OF LAW: POLICE PROSECUTES HON ALEXANDER IKWEGH FOR ASSAULT.. Details soon." The incident gained significant attention after a video surfaced showing Ikwechegh berating Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya for refusing to leave his car to deliver a package. In the footage, Ikwechegh is seen slapping the driver multiple times and threatening to make him "disappear.
