The Nigeria Police Force has initiated an investigation into the unauthorized use of its uniform by social critic Martins Otse, popularly known as Very Dark Man (VDM). A video featuring VDM dressed in police attire and referring to himself as ‘CSP Very Dark Man, the number 1 online police,’ has gone viral, prompting public concern.
In a statement released on October 26, the police force condemned the use of its uniforms and accoutrements by VDM, asserting that such actions are illegal. The statement emphasized that the investigation aims to uncover the source of the police gear used and the authority under which he acted.
The police reminded the public that the unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements is a criminal offense, as outlined in Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, and carries strict penalties.
The police statement read: “The Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns the unauthorized use of official uniforms and accoutrements by an online personality, Mr. Martins Otse, popularly known as ‘VDM.’ The Force unequivocally disassociates itself from this unauthorized portrayal and has launched a full investigation.”
While acknowledging the creativity of young Nigerians in content creation, the police cautioned against the misuse of police symbols, stressing that such actions undermine the integrity and values of the Force and will not be tolerated
