In Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, called on the new generation of content creators and social media influencers to minimize negative rhetoric surrounding Nigeria. Speaking at the celebration of National Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2024, Idris emphasized the importance of upholding ethical standards in their craft and prioritizing national interests.
The event, themed "New Digital Frontiers of Information: Media and Information Literacy for Public Interest Information," was organized by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation in collaboration with the International Media and Information Literacy Institute and the Open University of Nigeria.
Idris noted, "If we want Nigeria to grow, we cannot always emphasize the negatives." While acknowledging the media's role in holding government and leaders accountable, he stressed the need to balance criticism with a focus on positive developments. He pointed out that excessive negativity could deter investment and hinder the country's progress towards prosperity, as envisioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Minister also condemned the rise of fake news on social media, warning that it poses a serious threat to the unity, peace, and development of the nation. He urged creators to embrace the transformative impact of the digital age, using their platforms to foster a more constructive dialogue about Nigeria's future
