A 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, has been sentenced to 11 years imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Lagos for importing 74 parcels of Canadian Loud, a potent strain of synthetic cannabis weighing 35.20 kilograms, into Nigeria. The sentencing took place on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
Munju was arraigned on two counts of drug trafficking by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following her arrest at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, on October 3, 2024. She was apprehended during the inward clearance of passengers arriving on a KLM flight.
During her arrest, Munju claimed that she was recruited to traffic the drugs through an online platform for 10,000 Canadian dollars, which she intended to use to fund her ongoing master’s degree program in Canada.
Justice Dehinde Dipeolu convicted Munju after she pleaded guilty to the charges brought against her. The judge sentenced her to six years of imprisonment for the first count and five years for the second count. Additionally, Justice Dipeolu offered her an alternative of a N50 million fine for each count, totaling N100 million, should she wish to avoid imprisonment.
