UN Allocates $6 Million to Support Flood Victims in Borno

The United Nations has announced a $6 million fund to assist flood victims in Maiduguri, Borno State. Mohammed Fall, the UN's Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, made this announcement in a statement on Tuesday, September 17.

He explained that a joint mission involving UN agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the Nigeria Red Cross Society visited Maiduguri over the weekend. The team met with individuals affected by the floods, many of whom had already been displaced multiple times due to conflict and insecurity in the region.

The flooding resulted from an overflow at the Alau Dam, located about 10 miles south of Maiduguri. Fall stated, "We and our partners are providing hot meals, facilitating air drops of food to hard-to-reach areas cut off by floodwaters, and trucking in water. We are also offering water and sanitation hygiene services, along with water purification tablets to prevent disease outbreaks. Additionally, we are supplying hygiene and dignity kits to women and girls, as well as emergency health and shelter services."
