Tinubu Administration Committed To Girl-Child Education – Shettima

 

 

 

 

Vice President Kashim Shettima has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration is devoted to issues of girl-child education and gender empowerment.

 

The Vice President made the remarks during a meeting with a United Nations team led by the UN Deputy Secretary-General (UNDSG) and Chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group, Mrs Amina Mohammed, on Wednesday.

 

He told the Malala Fund that the federal government would work with them for the better good of Nigeria.

 

In separate statements, Mrs. Amina Mohammed and Ms. Malala Yousafzai praised the federal government's efforts to promote SDGs 4 and 5, observing progress in the areas of gender parity and girls' education across the country.

 

Yousafzai, a Pakistani female education activist and 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner, told reporters after a closed-door meeting that she was in Nigeria to celebrate her 26th birthday, adding that she had been traveling around the world meeting girls from all over the world and raising awareness about the issues that girls face since her UN speech at the age of 16.

 

Malala stated that she has previously visited schools and interacted with education campaigners as well as students in Abuja and Borno State, emphasizing the importance of girls' education in determining Nigeria's future.

 

The delegation included the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr Matthias Schmale; the Executive Director of the UN Office of Partnerships, Ms. Annemarie Hou; the Special Assistant to the DSG, Ms. Hadiza Elayo; the Senior Advisor to the Resident Coordinator, Mr Frederic Eno; and Mr Ziauddin Yousafzai, Co-Founder of the Malala Fund.
