Stomach Ulcer. Ulcers have become one of the most common medical conditions suffered by many Nigerians.

 

Ulcers are open sores that develop on the lining of the stomach, esophagus, or small intestine. Among the many types of ulcers, stomach ulcers are most common.

 

Contrary to what many sufferers believe, stomach ulcer is not an everyday ailment and therefore one should not rely on self medication as ulcers can pose serious health risks if not treated early and properly.

 

 

Does spicy food cause stomach ulcer?

Spicy food is not yet proven to cause stomach ulcers. But in an individual already suffering from stomach ulcer, consuming a spicy diet can aggravate the condition.

 

Are stomach ulcers treatable?

Yes when diagnosed early, stomach ulcer is very much treatable

 

 

The most common causes of ulcers include:

 

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection: This is a bacterial infection that can damage the lining of the stomach and cause ulcers.

 

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): These drugs, including aspirin and ibuprofen, can irritate the lining of the stomach and cause ulcers.

 

Excessive alcohol consumption: Drinking too much alcohol can irritate the lining of the stomach and increase the risk of ulcers.

 

Smoking: Tobacco use can increase the production of stomach acid, which can irritate the lining of the stomach and cause ulcers.

 

Stress: While stress alone does not cause ulcers, it can exacerbate the symptoms of an existing ulcer.

 

Genetics: Some people may be genetically predisposed to developing ulcers.

 

Other medical conditions: Certain medical conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, Crohn's disease, and liver and kidney disease can increase the risk of developing ulcers.
