Police Rearrest Inmate Who Escaped Borno Prison During Flood

The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the rearrest of Abubakar Mohammed, one of the inmates who escaped during the recent flooding that caused the collapse of the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Maiduguri.

Approximately 274 inmates managed to flee when the facility's fence gave way during the disaster. SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the command's spokesperson, announced on Tuesday, "We are pleased to report the successful rearrest of Abubakar Mohammed, 27, who was serving a sentence for culpable homicide and had escaped from the medium-security custodial center in Maiduguri."

On September 15, 2024, around 3:00 PM, a resident of Bulakara Ward in Gubio LGA alerted the police after spotting Abubakar in Gubio town following his escape due to the flood damage. A police patrol team quickly responded, leading to his apprehension. Abubakar will be handed over to the Nigerian Correctional Service, and efforts are underway to locate any other escaped inmates in the area
