JAMB Announces Minimum Score For Admission Into Universities, Polytechnics, COE

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has adopted the National Minimum Tolerable admission score of 140 into tertiary

universities and 100 into polytechnics and colleges of education.

At the 2023 Policy Meeting of Tertiary Institutions on Saturday in Abuja, the JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, revealed this.

According to him, all institutions in the country either public or private, must not go below the approved points.

Additionally, he stated that each postsecondary school must uphold its own basic standards, particularly with regard to institutional screening and grading in the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, or SSCE, which cannot be less than 50 marks.

”All institutions must abide by this minimum point. This means that no institution can go below the standard.

"For the 15 private universities that demand between 120 and 130 as minimum points, note that the 140 is sacrosanct and must not be violated.

“This is because the system put in place will not recognise 139, so ensure you comply,” he said.

Additionally, Mr. Oloyede stated that organisations cannot charge applicants a screening fee of more than N2,000.

Due to the rising cost of logistics for administering the exam across the country, Oloyede has hinted that the board is considering a policy that would permit applicants who wish to take the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to do so using a personal phone device.

Candidates who wish to take the UTME in the future may be required to bring their own gadgets to the examination room under the "Bring Your Own Device" policy.

Oloyede claims that it costs the Board more than N1.2 billion to equip CBT centres in Kaduna state, particularly in terms of buying the computers that candidates use.

The JAMB registrar urged prospective undergraduates to look at other tertiary education options, particularly polytechnics and colleges of education.
