INEC demands prosecution of Adamawa REC

After a closed-door meeting, the Independent National Electoral Commission says it will pen Baba Ahmed, the Inspector General of Police, to investigate and arraign Hudu Ari, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Adamawa State.

This decision was taken on Tuesday at the technical meeting attended by national commissioners of INEC in Abuja.

INEC also decided to write the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, to brief the President,  Muhammadu Buhari, about the action of the REC.

According to INEC official Facebok handle, “At its meeting today, April 18, 2023, the Commission discussed matters arising from the Adamawa Governorship election and decided to:

“Write to the Inspector-General of Police for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Ari.

“Request the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the unwholesome behaviour of the REC for further action.

“The collation process shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer.

“Detailed official statement will follow shortly.”

The meeting came barely 24 hours after the electoral magistrate ordered Ari to stay away from its office in Adamawa.

INEC’s action was based on Ari’s declaration of the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Aisha Dahiru, popularly known as Binani, as the governor-elect in Saturday’s supplementary election before the conclusion of the collation procedure.
