I rejected their money bags and threats, insisting that peoples’ votes must count — Abia INEC Returning Officer, Prof Nnenna Oti.

Professor Nnenna Oti, the vice chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), has claimed that she was offered money and threatened to compromise the Abia governorship race,  but declined.


 

She revealed this on Tuesday as she triumphantly entered the school.


 

Staff members and students gave Prof. Oti a hero's welcome upon his return to the university.


 

Professor Nnenna Oti received a hero's welcome on Tuesday when she returned to Federal University of Technology, FUTO, Owerri.


 

People can be seen singing and dancing while carrying a banner that reads, "Welcome back Nnenna Oti, Heroine of Nigeria Democracy," in a video clip that TRIBUNE ONLINE was able to obtain.


 

During the hero's welcome, Oti addressed the media and said, "As an electoral official, I have never in my life taken part in any election, but duty called.


 

“I made my enquiries from Abuja…


 

“If I perish, I perish, they came with their threats, they came with their money, they came with their intimidation.


 

“I didn’t start today; I stand here before God, Jesus Christ. I have never defrauded anyone, all l I did was to declare the riot act as follows: Under me, votes must count. Under me, the people’s mandate will be upheld because I, Professor Nnenna Oti, can never do evil”.


 

According to the INEC's findings, Alex Otti of the Labour Party (LP) won by 175, 467 votes over Enyinnaya Nwafor of the Young People's Party (YPP) and Okey Ahiwe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
