Halitosis, popularly known as bad breath or mouth odor for some, is a common condition characterized by an unpleasant odor emanating from the mouth.

Most times what causes this bad breath are the common things you do or don't do.

When you're told to brush and you don't do so, poor oral hygiene.

Certain foods like onions, garlic can cause mouth odor when you don't brush after consuming them.

Tobacco use, dry mouth, keeping quiet for a long time, medical conditions, and medications can also cause mouth odor.

Out of the factors causing halitosis, the most common is poor oral hygiene. Food particles that are left in the mouth break down and release compounds causing bad breath. This is why you are advised to brush or floss regularly especially after eating. Mouthwash can also help to remove these food particles and prevent mouth odor.

In some cases, halitosis can be a sign of an underlying medical condition, such as gum disease. If your bad breath persists despite good oral hygiene, it is important to see a dentist or doctor to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.
