Georgian Parliament Passes Controversial Anti-LGBTQ Legislation

On Tuesday, September 17, Georgian lawmakers approved the final reading of a contentious law focused on "family values and the protection of minors," imposing extensive restrictions on LGBTQ rights.

The bill grants authorities the power to prohibit Pride events, ban public displays of the LGBTQ rainbow flag, and enforce censorship on films and literature. It also reiterates the existing ban on same-sex marriage and prohibits gender reassignment surgery, according to CNN.

Leaders of the ruling Georgian Dream party argue that the legislation is necessary to uphold traditional moral standards in Georgia, where the influential Orthodox Church holds significant sway. The anti-LGBTQ+ bill passed with 84 out of 150 lawmakers in favor during its third and final reading. It now awaits the signature of President Salome Zourabichvili, who has had conflicts with the ruling party. While she can veto the bill, the parliament, dominated by Georgian Dream, has the power to override her and enact the legislation regardless
