A giant floodlight located at the K entrance of the National stadium in Lagos collapsed following an early down pour of rain.

The incident witnessed by many caused panic amongst athletes and other Nigerians but reports suggest no casualties were recorded. Some athletes expressed their displeasure over the government’s lack of concern and inexistent approach towards the rehabilitation and maintenance of the stadium facilities which is said to be one of the best sporting facilities in Western Africa.

Sport’s minister Sunday Dare, through the Director, Press and Public Relations, Manga Mohammed, also commented on the incident as he described it as “an act of nature” but also went further to state that the 51-year old stadium needs urgent renovations and the ongoing repairs at the stadium does not make provisions for the renovation or replacement of the floodlights and 16 other parts of the stadium.
