A final-year male student in the department of Public Administration of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) popularly known as Mayor, was shot dead on Monday Night in his room at Hall 3 on campus by a suspected cultist.

The body of Mayor was moved in an ambulance that same Monday night to the mortuary of the neighboring University Benin Teaching hospital (UBTH).

The spokesperson of UNIBEN, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, on Tuesday morning, condemned the brutal killing of the student.

Dr. Benedicta said:

“The management of UNIBEN has condemned the brutal and sad killing of a final year student, known mostly as ‘Mayor’ (real name withheld), in the night of Monday, 3rd April, 2023.

“The gruesome shooting occurred in one of the halls of the residence, and was carried out by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.

“While commiserating with the family and colleagues of the late student, management enjoins other students to be calm, as the police and other security agencies are working hard to fish out and arrest the culprit.

“Management is also working closely with the internal security units, in ensuring that such dastardly incident does not occur again within the university’s premises.”

UNIBEN used to be notorious for cultism, but the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lillian Salami, fought the menace to a standstill, thereby sanitizing the university.
