The benefits of eating healthy foods cannot be overemphasized. The popular saying "you are what you eat" holds true for so many of us.

The belief that eating healthy requires a large sum of money is untrue. Rather it is the unhealthy foods that cost you your health and your wealth.

There are varieties of healthy Nigerian foods you can eat without spending much;

Moi Moi

This meal is made from beans and is rich in protein and fibre and can be eaten with vegetables.
Moi Moi is  necessary for good health and can help you maintain a healthy weight.

Pepper Soup

Pepper soup can cure colds and boost your immunity. It is also rich in vitamins, potassium, iron and other nutrients.

Àmàlà

Àmàlà is a delicacy in the western part of Nigeria. This food can be prepared in three different ways that include cassava flour, yam flour, and plantain flour.
The plantain flour amàlà is beneficial to diabetics due to its low sugar content.

Ogbono Soup

When considering a healthy and affordable Nigerian food, ogbono soup should be in your list. The ogbono seed contains amino acids, some nutrients, vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium, calcium and iron.

Edikang Ikong Soup

A very healthy soup prepared using two types of vegetables; waterleaf and ugu. It is a good source of zinc and iron and it is very nutritious. The ugu vegetable is rich in vitamins.

Boli

Roasted plantain popularly called Boli is a common healthy food. Rich in vitamins, fibre, iron, antioxidants, potassium, Boli is one meal that should not be missing in your meal plan.

Yam Porridge

Prepared with herbs, peppers, spices and other ingredients, yam porridge is rich in fibre, vitamins and carbohydrates.

Bitterleaf soup

The green leafy veggies contained in the soup reduces the bad cholesterol while improving good cholesterol. This makes it one of the best foods for a healthy heart.

Ewedu

Most popular among the Yorubas, the soup contains rich dark green veggies which is a good source of nutrients and antioxidants.
The soup is also recommended as a good source of iron and for fighting blood related conditions like anaemia.

Avocado

Avocados are fat-rich foods that contain healthy fats. Avocados help maintain a healthy weight because it reduces the bad cholesterol and increases the good cholesterol.

Zobo

Zobo or Hibiscus drink is one of the popular drinks in Nigeria. It is a very healthy drink that helps to reduce blood pressure. Zobo is best taken without sweeteners or other unhealthy additives.
