Court Dismisses Application For Live Telecast

The Presidential Election Petition Court on Monday threw out the application by the Labour and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to allow for a live broadcast of the court proceedings.

The application was dismissed on the grounds that he failed to cite any authority to back up the request.

Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani who delivered the ruling on Obi’s motion on the request for a live telecast said, live streaming of court proceedings ought to be planned and budgeted for before the commencement of the trial of any petition.

“The application lacks merit and is accordingly dismissed,” Justice Tsammani said.

Making references to other countries, the Justice reiterated that live streaming has to be planned and budgeted for and is not carried out from the blues.

He said such an application is never allowed without rules enabling it to come into effect and as such he said the PEP court can not allow it without the necessary framework or policies.

In a unanimous decision of the five-man panel, the court dismissed the application.
