CONTROVERSY OVER TOPE ALABI'S LYRICS OF YORUBA INCANTATION IN THE CHURCH.

The recent viral video featuring renowned gospel singer Tope Alabi has sparked controversy on social media. Known for her powerful indigenous soul-stirring lyrics, Tope Alabi was captured ministering in an undisclosed church. In the video, she can be heard uttering the words “Aboru Aboye,” a secret language associated with Yoruba traditionalists, while her backup singers echo the phrase. The congregants in the church joyfully danced along to the rhythm.

“Aboru Aboye" holds significant meaning within the context of Yoruba spirituality, particularly among initiates and practitioners of Ifá divination, such as Babalawos. The term “Aboru” can be interpreted as “sacrifice goes well” or “ritual goes well”. Conversely, “Aboye” signifies the notion of performing rites and sacrifices correctly and successfully, leading to victory, success, and overall harmony.

The inclusion of these sacred phrases in a gospel performance has sparked diverse reactions on social media. Some have praised Tope Alabi for embracing elements of Yoruba culture in her music, celebrating the convergence of spirituality and music. Others, however, have expressed concern over the appropriation of religious practices and the potential clash between traditional Yoruba beliefs and Christianity.

As the video continues to trend and elicit strong responses, it serves as a catalyst for broader discussions regarding cultural appropriation, religious syncretism, and the boundaries between different belief systems.
