ASR Africa Empowers Girls in Northern Nigeria with Tech-Based Mentorship Programme for Tertiary Institutions

ASR Africa Launches Mentorship Programme for Female Students at FCET Gusau

The Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa) has yet again demonstrated its commitment to education by unveiling a mentorship programme for young female students at the Federal College of Education, Technical (FCET), Gusau, Zamfara State.

The launch of the mentorship programme is in line with the principles outlined in the 2022 UN Women Convention on the Status of Women (CSW) held in New York, USA. The initiative is designed to bridge the digital divide for Nigerian women and girls in STEM fields and empower them to achieve gender equality.

Dr. Ubon Udoh, the Managing Director/CEO of ASR Africa, stated that the organisation's commitment to education is beyond providing infrastructure and financial support. He added that ASR Africa's collaboration with the management and staff of FCET Gusau is one of its many technical assistance partnerships, and the female students should take advantage of it.

According to Udoh, "With the launch of this programme, ASR Africa is proud to stand at the forefront of advancing the UN Women's mission by striving to bridge the digital divide for Nigerian women and girls."

In his response, Prof. Umar Bello, Provost of FCET Gusau, expressed his profound gratitude to ASR Africa's Chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu, for surpassing their initial request for infrastructural assistance to include technical assistance, which would benefit the school immensely.

The ASR Africa mentorship program aims to address the challenges that young women in STEM fields encounter, such as a shortage of female role models, limited opportunities for mentoring and sponsorship, and entrenched cultural and societal biases. The mentorship program is expected to increase the number of female students opting for careers in STEM fields, enhance their academic performance, and prepare them for future career prospects.

This mentorship programme unveils the unlimited potential for female students in STEM fields and signifies ASR Africa's commitment to bridging the gender gap in the area. The mentorship programme is one of ASR Africa's many initiatives aimed at contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting gender equality.
