ANABOLIC STEROIDS; THE OTHER SIDE YOU DON'T SEE

 

Anabolic steroids are prescription-only medicines that individuals sometimes take without medical advice in order to increase their muscle mass and improve athletic performance.

Individuals who use these drugs without medical prescription are guilty of drug abuse. Taking it this way can result to addiction and serious side effects.

Anabolic steroids are drugs that copy the effects of testosterone, and are different from corticosteroids, a more commonly prescribed steroid.

Because anabolic steroids can be used as performance-enhancing drugs, muscle mass increase and for decreasing body fat, some individuals consume them regularly to build up their bodies.
Others are of the belief that taking anabolic steroids will help them become fit and healthy.

Taking anabolic steroids regularly is a dangerous drug habit because of the side effects that comes with taking the drugs.

Side effects of Anabolic Steroids;
Regular consumption of anabolic steroids can cause both physical and psychological effects in men and women who abuse the drugs.

Physical effects in men include;
Reduced sperm count, infertility, shrunken testicles, erectile dysfunction, hair loss, breast development, increased risk of prostate cancer, severe acne, stomach pain

Side effects in women includes;
Facial hair growth and body hair, loss of breasts, swelling of the clitoris, a deepened voice, an increased sex drive, problems with periods, hair loss, severe acne.

Psychological effects

Anabolic Steroids abuse can cause psychological issues such as;

Aggressive behaviour, mood swings, paranoia, manic behaviour, hallucinations and delusions.

The use of anabolic steroids can also predispose individuals to Hepatitis B and C infection, HIV transmission. This is because it is often injected and involves sharing of needles.

There is also the risk of addiction
Continuous and regular intake of anabolic steroids can make an individual addicted. When addicted, the individual continues taking the drugs despite the side effects he experiences.

Abrupt withdrawal from the drug by addicted person can cause withdrawal symptoms.
It is medically advised for gradual stopping of anabolic steroids to avoid the withdrawal symptoms. This is done by giving lesser dose gradually.

In addition, abusers of anabolic steroids can suffer any of the medical conditions;
Heart attack
Kidney failure
Liver problems
Hypertension
Blood clots

It is important to note that anabolic steroids should only be used under medical guidance as long term use can pose serious health problems.
