AFCON 2023: Nigeria secure qualification.

 

 

Nigeria have secured their qualification to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament which is the 34th Edition of the biennial event organized by CAF scheduled to be played in Ivory Coast between January 2024 to February the same year.

 

Nigeria booked their ticket after a 3-2 victory against Sierra Leoneat the SKD Stadium in Monrovia. Victor Osimhen‘s first half brace gave Nigeria the promising start to the game which later turned out to be a nervy one for the away side as Sierra Leone fought back to draw the game level thanks to goals from Mustapha Bundu in the 41st minute and Augustus Kargbo in the 84th minute. Substitute Kelechi Iheanacho dramatically won the game as his last minute strike secured qualification for his country. The win saw Nigeria move to 12 points after 5 games in the qualification series helping them secure qualification from Group A.

 

The Super Eagles would be making their twentieth appearance in the competition’s history.

 

This edition of the tournament was supposed to be the 3rd taking place in the summer of 2023 since the 2019 edition but CAF announced a decision to postpone it to 2024 on the 3rd of July, 2022 due to weather concerns in the host country during the summer.
